Glasgow’s Golden Generation delivers 5,000th parcel in 115 days

GGG has delivered its 5,000th parcel to vulnerable older adults across the city. Glasgow’s Golden Generation initially set up an emergency food and essentials delivery service to older adults just before lockdown was announced.

The charity usually operates three day care centres for older adults, including those with dementia, however these had to close to ensure the safety of both staff and service users.

Initially the food parcel service was set up as a temporary measure, while the charity looked to find ways to support its clients during the pandemic.

However, it soon became clear that the service was a lifeline to many older adults who were shielding, housebound or vulnerable.

Even now lockdown measures are relaxing, the service is still vital to older adults who are unable to get out to buy the essentials they need.

The recipient of the 5,000th parcel, Jessie Attenborourgh said,

“I’ve received a weekly parcel from Glasgow’s Golden Generation throughout the pandemic and lockdown.

“Without the charity, I don’t know how I would get the basic items I need as it’s difficult for me to get out to the supermarket.

“It’s great to hear a friendly voice at the end of the phone every week, as well as delivering parcels to me, the staff check I’m ok and see if there’s anything else I need.

”Throughout the pandemic, GGG has made sure I have never felt alone.”

Richard Donald, newly appointed CEO of Glasgow’s Golden Generation said,

“I am delighted that the team has been able to continue to do what it does best during the Covid 19 crisis – providing care and support to older adults in Glasgow.

“The charity is operating slightly differently from usual, but since the beginning of the pandemic, staff have leapt to action and have gone over and above to ensure the wellbeing of both existing and new clients.

“In addition to the parcel service, the charity’s Befriending and Welfare Services are continuing to operate as they are needed now more than ever.

”To reach this milestone in just 115 days is unbelievable – we could not have imagined the service would be so necessary or so popular.”

In total the charity has supported over 500 older adults with 5,000 parcels and made over 6,000 phone calls to ensure the safety and wellbeing of older adults in Glasgow.

The service has been initially funded by a £10k donation from the Celtic Charity Foundation, 8k from the City Charitable Trust and 9k from SPEN. The Celtic FC Foundation has committed a further £5k to allow the service to continue.

Each parcel costs the charity around £5 and contains items such as tinned food, fresh milk and bread, cleaning products and specific items requested by the client.

The charity is continuing to fundraise to provide its vital services including delivering parcels, befriending and welfare support.
